Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

The VITA Program offers free tax preparation for low- to moderate-income (generally, $41,000 and below) individuals and families. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities throughout Georgia. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Most locations also offer free electronic filing, which enables consumers to receive their refund more quickly than traditional paper filing, and to have their refund checks directly deposited into their bank accounts. Many individuals and families who participate in the VITA program often qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

The EITC is a refundable federal income tax credit aimed at offsetting the burden of social security taxes for low-income working individuals and families. The EITC has no effect on certain benefits. In most cases, EITC payments will not be used to determine eligibility for Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), food stamps, low-income housing or most Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) payments.
